The Story

About This Place

Nomi 81 Izakaya occupies a prime stretch of riverfront in Thao Dien, with an unobstructed sightline to Landmark 81 across the Saigon River. The outdoor format means guests eat with the evening breeze moving through — a contrast to the air-conditioned interiors that define most of the neighborhood's restaurants. Tables fill from 5 PM with a mix of expats, locals, and the post-pickleball crowd from the adjacent courts, who stop in for cold drinks and sharing plates after sessions.

The kitchen leans into the izakaya format: smaller plates designed to be ordered in rounds, with Vietnamese ingredients worked into Japanese-style preparations. Pork tenderloin is among the dishes that draw repeat orders, though portions have drawn comment from some diners who find the à la carte pricing steep relative to size. The creative plating and attentive floor team — several staff members noted by name across nearly 700 reviews — offset the value debate for most guests.

What separates this spot from the dense Thao Dien dining scene is primarily the setting. Few restaurants in the neighborhood offer true outdoor riverside tables with this kind of skyline backdrop, and the evening-only hours reinforce its positioning as a destination for drinks and a long, unhurried meal rather than a quick lunch stop. The romantic pull of the river view and night breeze draws couples, while the group-friendly sharing format and proximity to the sports court bring in a livelier crowd on weekends.

With a 4.9 rating across more than 700 reviews, the consistency of experience appears high — the occasional note about portion sizes the exception rather than the pattern.

Great local Japanese restaurant with the perfect location on the river with Landmark 81 in view. The food was great - lots of choice from hotpot (never tried) to yakitori and dumplings. The price was very reasonable for what you get. Lovely staff who make you feel welcome & service is fast, so maybe order a couple of dishes at a time!

Nomi 81 is located strategically on the other side of Saigon river, offering diners almost unobstructed view of HCMC CBD area. From here you can see the Landmark 81 and other high buildings in the city centre. That is the most unique feature of the restaurant. The open concept also gives diners a lot of space to enjoy. However, it makes the dining experience most ideal for small groups rather than a big gathering. We came on Friday and there was live music. The music choice could have been better, and the sounds could have been less loud so that we could feel more comfortable with speakers projecting at us. The restaurant features izakaya slash tapas cuisine styles, with a lot of small dishes for sharing. The foods were tasty and raw materials were fresh. I just feel the menu can focus on some signature dishes or special dishes rather than a long menu. In general, I had a good time and really enjoyed the foods here. It is for special occasion with friends and families.
